The Kodály Center at the University of Redlands hosts a Summer certificate program at our Marin campus in Northern California. This program offers levels of certification in learnings derived from the philosophy and pedagogy of Zoltán Kodály.
All participants, new and returning, for the Kodály Certificate must register each Summer. If you are returning for level 2, please register now (click here).
June 15 through July 3, 2026
Tuition: $500/credit, six credits per level

Scholarships
Scholarships will be offered for the 2026 Kodály Summer Certificate as follows:
- Ten $2,500 scholarships for full-time study
- Five $1,000 scholarships for part-time study
The application deadline is May 1, 2026. Students will be notified of scholarship acceptance by email.

Pedagogy & Practicum
MUS-671 Kodály Pedagogy I, Practicum (2 Credits). Course offers study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kodály approach to music education. Focus is on the Kodály-Ádám sequencing of concepts and lesson planning for Preschool, Kindergarten, and First and grades. Content includes games and activities leading to discovery of music elements.
MUS-672 Kodály Pedagogy II, Practicum (2 Credits). Course offers a continuation of the study of the philosophy and pedagogy of the Kodály approach to music education. Focus is on the Kodály-Ádám sequencing of concepts and lesson planning for Second and Third grades. Content includes games and activities leading to discovery of music elements.
Folk Song Materials
MUS-674 Kodály Folk Music I (1 Credits). This course will introduce students to children's folk songs and singing games for use in pre-school and primary grades. Materials include songs, games, and dances from the rich diversity of musical traditions from diverse cultures. Students will be introduced to standard folk song analysis, music retrieval and main categories of children's music.
MUS-675 Kodály Folk Music II (1 Credits). This course continues the study of folk music and folk lore of many cultures. Children's folk songs and singing games, folk music for ceremony, ritual and other functions will be explored, analyzed musically with Standard Analysis techniques, and considered within cultural contexts. Music retrieval and database collections will continue with multicultural materials.
Kodály Solfege & Musicianship
MUS-677 Kodály Musicianship I Foundation (1 Credits). This course is an introduction to the application of aural-vocal musicianship skills using moveable do solfege. Classes include sight singing, ear training, intonation, memorization, dictation, harmonic hearing, and stylistic analysis. Students will be asked to perform pre-assigned materials in class in groups and as individuals.
MUS-678 Kodály Musicianship II (1 Credits). This course continues the development of aural-vocal musicianship skills using moveable do solfege, absolute, neutral pitches and hand signs beyond the foundational level. Activities include sight singing, ear training, intonation, memorization, dictation, harmonic hearing, and stylistic analysis. Students will perform pre-assigned materials in class individually and in groups.
Kodály Conducting Courses
MUS-680 Kodály Conducting I (1 Credits). This course will develop musical and conducting skills for choral works suitable for beginning groups. The course will involve practicum, reflection, observation, part work tasks (eg. sing & play) and conducting.
MUS-681 Kodály Conducting II (1 Credits). The course will develop conducting skills further, employing a sequential course of study for choral works suitable for intermediate groups.
Choral Ensemble, participants and alumni
MUSI-642 Large Choral Ensemble (0-2 Credits). An intensive study, preparation, rehearsal and performance of substantial choral works for large ensemble.
