Professor James B. Pick does research in the areas of management information systems, GIS, urban studies, population, and renewable energy. His teaching areas are management information systems, GIS, and analytics. He is chair of the faculty assembly in the School of Business and Society, past chair of Department of Management and Business, and founding director of Center for Business GIS and Spatial Analysis. He is the author of 14 books and over 185 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. His most recent books are Spatial Business (Esri Press, 2022), co-authored with Thomas Horan and Avijit Sarkar, The Global Digital Divides: Explaining Change, co-authored with Avijit Sarkar (Springer, 2015), Exploring the Urban Community: A GIS Approach, co-authored with Richard Greene (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2012), and Geo-Business: GIS in the Digital Organization (John Wiley and Sons, 2008).

Pick has been principal investigator or co-P.I. on grants from the Ford Foundation, U.S. Small Business Administration, and University of California. His awards include nine for faculty distinguished research, teaching, and service from the University of Redlands, Senior Fulbright Scholar Award for Mexico, and outstanding alumnus award from Northern Illinois University. He was visiting researcher at UC Irvine five times, as well as visiting professional fellow at University of New South Wales in 2022, visiting professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, visiting scholar at City University of Hong Kong and Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012, visiting scholar at Lingnan University, Hong Kong in 2009, and at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City in 1997 and 2001.

He is currently doing research projects on the global digital divide and on GIS strategies. He has been on the organizing committees for international conferences in information systems and was recognized by the Association for Information Systems for his leadership in fostering the GIS field for four years and for leadership for a decade in fostering information systems study of Latin America. He is senior editor of Information Systems for Development and past senior associate editor of European Journal of Information Systems. Throughout his career, he has served on 21 doctoral committees. He holds a B.A. from Northwestern University, M.S. from Northern Illinois University, and Ph.D. from University of California, Irvine.
