Professional Background

James C. Spee received his Ph.D. from The Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. He holds an MBA from Claremont, a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a bachelor of science in engineering and letters from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He teaches courses in strategy and entrepreneurship at the University of Redlands School of Business & Society. He holds a joint appointment with the Department of Environmental Studies in the University of Redlands College of Arts and Sciences where he teaches courses on sustainable business, sustainable business development, and green design.

Professor Spee's research focuses on how to connect career and technical education (CTE) pathways to entrepreneurship education in order to create employment opportunities close to where people live. He is also active in diversity and inclusion efforts at the University that resulted in their designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution. He is a member of the board for ONE i/e, a nonprofit supporting startup founders, and of Joshua Tree Recreational Education Experience (JTREE), a nonprofit working to build an outdoor education campus inside Joshua Tree National Park.

A native of Seattle, Spee's parents owned a small business that chartered helicopters and ran a small airport in Maple Valley, Washington. He spent three years working on a community development and microcredit program in Bangladesh and has worked for nonprofits in California including Union Station Foundation, which serves the homeless in Pasadena, and the Boys and Girls Club of Redlands. He is a volunteer for the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals Aviation Career Academy and for the Tom Wathen Center's Aviation Academy at Flabob Airport in Jurupa Valley, California.
